Boston Bruins Cap Penalty

Boston Bruins to Face Substantial Salary Cap Penalty Next Season

Bruins Overages to Cost Them $45 Million

By Northstar Bets | April 23, 2023 at 12:54 PM

With the NHL salary cap expected to raise only $1 million, PuckPedia's Hart Levine confirms that the Bruins will face a $45 million cap penalty next season created by performance bonus overages.

The Bruins have less than $5 million in cap space. If the Bruins exceed the $82.5 million cap by any of the $45 million in bonuses, they will add the difference to their 2023-24 as an overage penalty.

Levine reports that general manager Don Sweeney will be forced to participate in the NHL's buyout window, which opens on June 15th, 2023.

The Bruins gave out many performance bonuses this past season and most of those bonuses count towards this season's cap. David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, Matt Grzelcyk, and Charlie McAvoy are among the Bruins that carried significant bonuses.

Others that will have cap hits next season due to bonuses are Jeremy Swayman, Jake DeBrusk, Nick Foligno, Tomas Nosek, and Mike Reilly.

Some of these players will likely be bought out or traded in order for the Bruins to get under the cap.

The Bruins will need to clear a significant amount of cap space in order to re-sign some of their key players, such as David Krejci and Pavel Zacha.

The Bruins have a lot of work to do this offseason, but they have the assets to make some moves. It will be interesting to see what Sweeney does to get the Bruins under the cap and back into contention next season.
